Philadelphia’s JRA Hosts First Jewish Food & Community Expo

For its annual fundraiser, Philadelphia’s Jewish Relief Agency wanted to show its great appreciation for the tremendous work of its core volunteers as well as educate the public about issues of hunger in the community. The Jewish Relief Agency is a volunteer-driven organization whose goal is to help Jews in need. Through the efforts of JRA’s network of more than 7,000 volunteers, it provides monthly food relief packages to over 2,500 low-income families throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.
The agency was looking to alter the format of its conventional fundraiser, an invitational dinner, as it somewhat limited the event’s scope and impact. The JRA needed a tactic to engage the whole community, yet it could not afford to diminish the funding required to run its programs.
To meet these challenges, LUBICOM created the JRA Jewish Food & Community Expo. In an unprecedented celebration of Jewish food, culture and community in Philadelphia, the Expo showcased the best of local, regional and international kosher fare and introduced culinary innovations in the kosher marketplace. Modeled after a consumer trade show, the event had a variety of vendors including packaged food distributors, caterers, bakeries, restaurants, a bookstore, a kitchen equipment supplier, supermarkets, etc. The day was packed with exciting activities such as cooking demonstrations, food tasting, author signings, a cooking contest and an interactive kids’ zone.
The community-wide, family-friendly expo was a spectacular success. LUBICOM created the event’s theme, including the name and logo, contacted the vendors, created the marketing material, offered consultation on the program and assisted with the on-site management. By coordinating all aspects of the one-day event, LUBICOM enabled the JRA to achieve its core goals while attaining the vital funding it needed to continue as the leading provider of hunger relief in the Philadelphia Jewish community.
